Graham Stairs
Popguru Sound & Vision

"The artist manager makes his or her living by commissioning the revenue earned by the clients he or she represents. I have always believed that if an artist is great in Canada than that artist will be considered great anywhere in the world. If you want to be successful in the music business, then one of the most important attributes you must possess is the ability to discover and develop talent. You can start out with a great business plan and start up cash, but, without "ears"; the ability to recognize talent when you hear it, none of that matters. So, my advice to young managers is, since your revenue is directly tied to your artists' revenue, make sure you back the right horses! "

Graham Stairs has twenty-six years of management experience and is president of Popguru Sound & Vision Ltd. He started off as a musician and then moved into A&R, working for the EMI, True North, Intrepid and Latitude labels. His signings included National Velvet, Rheostatics, Damhnait Doyle, Sandbox and Catherine MacLellan among others. He was also behind the Bruce Cockburn tribute album that gave Barenaked Ladies their first national hit with "Lovers In A Dangerous Time" and co-founded Intrepid Management where he represented Chalk Circle and National Velvet. He currently manages the Wilderness of Manitoba, Grand Analog, Delhi 2 Dublin, Martha and the Muffins, Lake Forest, This Sound Will Save You, The Red Horse Revelation and Martha Johnson.
