Toronto Virtual & Augmented Reality Expo spearheads its inaugural launch in Toronto
TORONTO, ON – VRTO, a Toronto Virtual Reality organization, is challenging industry professionals, members of the public, and press to navigate new realms of technology, art and culture at the Virtual & Augmented Reality World Conference & Expo. Running from June 26th – 27th at the Mattamy Centre (formerly Maple Leaf Gardens) with an industry day and special performance on June 25th, the Conference & Expo provides an inside view to the production, distribution and ethical considerations of the Virtual, Augmented, Mixed and Mediated Reality technologies alongside Wearables, Internet of Things (IoT), cryptocurrencies (like Ethereum and Bitcoin) and the next-web.
“We are at a historically significant turning point for a rapidly emerging industry that will affect, disrupt and transform virtually every aspect of our lives within the next ten years,” Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Executive Director of VRTO emphasizes, “As the technology begins to move into our living rooms, we seek to examine in-depth its potential impact on the psyche and to the culture at large. Toronto is a major crosswinds for the various disciplines at play and we are working on building infrastructure and education in immersive and experiential technologies to help guide it along a good path before the Megabrands take it over.”
This year, the Virtual & Augmented Reality World Conference & Expo is an opportunity to be part of an international event showcasing diverse projects with thought leaders providing insight and guidance to their experiences in authoring virtual and augmented reality content. It also offers an exhibition hall that focuses on offering audiences premium interactive immersive experiences with such technology as Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and room scale HTC Vive.
To date there is no show in Toronto – or Canada for that matter – that has singularly covered both vertical and public-facing events for those interested in taking a deep dive into interactive immersive technology at this scale, with industry leaders from Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and across Canada providing intensive training, presentations and panel discussions on conceptualization and production to distribution and monetization for immersive media and IoT across the spectrum.
The entire conference & expo is bringing industry leaders that include Ana Serrano – Chief Digital Officer from the Canadian Film Centre, visionary filmmaker Brett Leonard (Lawnmower Man, Virtuosity), Prof. Steve Mann the critically acclaimed founding father of wearable technology and Chief Scientist at Silicon Valley augmented reality company Meta, and many more.

Founded in 2015, VRTO (Virtual Reality Toronto) is an organization whose mission is to explore, develop and promote the intersection of arts, culture, society, research and science through immersive technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, and wearable technology. Founders of VRTO host the widely known FIVARS (Festival of International Virtual and Augmented Reality Stories), an annual festival designed to push the boundaries and definitions of interactive and immersive media. Though VRTO successfully ran VAR in 2015, Ontario’s largest VR technologies showcase, FIVARS and several sold out events, 2016 is the inaugural year for the VRTO World Conference & Expo.
